Dear Mom-To-Be,
For months your baby's eyes have been shut, but now they're almost fully developed and will soon be ready to open. No matter what color eyes you and the father have, your baby's eyes are blue: The irises don't display their final color until a few months after birth. Your baby's brain is maturing rapidly, and she's growing quickly. She's more than thirteen inches long and two pounds this week. Still quite lean, your baby still has lots of fat to put on.

my hope is that this blog will help us keep in touch with the family & friends a little better. As Damon and I go through a new time together we want eveyone to be able to enjoy it with us.

Dang You Uterus!
So, I can feel Olivia move inside me. Usually it’s at night (around 7pm) and when I am lying in bed reading. I only feel her on my lower left side. The other night she moved 4 times in a row so I had Damon put his hand on my stomach and she decided not to move again. I don’t know if my hands are really feeling her on the outside or if I can just feel her move on the inside. One of my favorite things with pregnant woman is when they are super pregnant and you can feel and see the baby move across the skin. I am starting to wonder if that will ever happen to me. Since I have a retroverted uterus Dr. Spetalnick says that I might not ever feel that. It seems like the same guts/fat that is has been keeping her warm and snuggly "like a down comforter" is also keeping me from my favorite pregnant thing! Ahh well I guess as long as she is safe in there my little pleasures are of no means.

Olivia .......... Nash
We have decided on Olivia's middle name! This was not easy. If she was a boy the middle initial would be a "D" after Damon and the rest of the Nash men (Damon's dad, Grandpa and brother - not a Nash but still...). Since it turned out that she was a girl we didn't know what in the world to pick. The process went a little something like this:
1. What if the 2nd child is another girl, still use D? - Yes
2. Don't want one kid to be have a special middle name and not the other
3. Maybe a middle name starting with D for both
4. D names for girls suck
5. Maybe an A for this kid and a D for the next?
6. That’s the ticket! Name 1 after the mom and 1 after the dad
7. Look at middle names that start with an A (since my name is Katherine Anne)
8. Cant end in an A b/c olivia ends in an A (one of Damon's rules)
9. Go through over 15 pages of girls names starting with A.
and now we have it!
Olivia Annabel Nash
starts with an A and has my middle name in it.
Deciding how we were going to spell Annabel was a task too. Most people spell it Annabelle but you can also spell it a variety of ways... Anabel, Annabel, Annabell, ect. We decided to keep the 2 n's since my middle name had 2 n's but only go with 'bel' rather than 'belle' to keep it shorter.
On the doctor front:
Went on 10/26 - gained a "significant" amount of weight (11 pounds) which is BS since the last nurse accounted for my shoes and clothes where as this (evil) nurse did not. Since I weigh myself every Monday morning I know it was about an 8 pound weight gain since I was at the doctor last - 1 month ago. Either way I should only gain 1 pound a week (nice to know now). So according to the OB office I have officially gained 3 pounds since May. Crazy since I have a basetball in my belly. Side note- LOVE my health at Vandy website! Tracks all my vital signs and labs! Next doctor visit (11/23) I do my glucose screening test --> Draw blood, drink a very sugary drink, wait 1 hour, draw blood again. I should get my results later that night.
Love,
Katie

Baby Bedding...UGH!
I am having the hardest time deciding on baby bedding. Those that know me know that I suck at deciding on things like this. Choosing paint is so torturous for me that I have only painted 1 wall at the new house (the laundry room, blue, still not sure if I love it). I have narrowed it down to 3. The 2 that are the same pattern just difference color are from Target and only available online. I think that is what is holding me up. I like to look and feel all of my options before deciding on just 1. I also love the idea of birds for the room rather than butterflies. But I like that the butterfly bedding from Babies R Us has a couple different colors rather than just 1 main color. Purple is my favorite color but the pink is adorable too. ARG! HELP!

My Belly at 22 weeks and 6 days
I'm not really sure when this belly appeared. I started noticing it last week some. These pictures are taken at night with a full belly and I'm not sucking in at all. I feel like the (belly) pictures are more impressive than what I feel/look like every day. My face on the other hand looks just like I feel - slightly run down and tired but happy and content. Olivia should weight around a pound and is about 12 inches long. :)
Still trying to come up with a middle name....

22 1/2 weeks along
From Parentsconnect.com
Your Mini's hands have grown bigger and stronger and the nerve endings in her fingers have developed her sense of touch. She's in there testing out her newfound abilities by touching her face and grabbing the umbilical cord. Other cool developments:
You're already raising a little Einstein. Your baby's brain is developing at a clip this week and will continue to do so until she's five years old (so load up on the Omega 3)!
Baby's hair is now a short, bright white crop (Billy Idol, eat your heart out!). No matter what color it will end up—red, blonde, black—all babies' hair lacks pigment at this point.
Your baby has started growing taste buds and may be able to detect strong flavors in the amniotic fluid. If you could see inside, you might catch her sticking out her tongue for a taste and then grimacing, a sign that perhaps you should chill on the chili powder.
Your baby now weighs almost a pound and measures almost 11 inches from her head to her heel, which is how the Stretch Armstrong in your uterus will be measured from here on out. Up 'til now your baby's legs were curled tight up against her torso, so she was measured from her head to her bottom (or crown to rump) and not head to toe. This week your mini is about as long as a package of Oreos and as heavy as a large bag of tortilla chips.

Doctor Appt on 9/28
Not much happened during the doctor’s appointment. Her heart beat was 130, which is still in the normal range. I haven't felt her kick or move; apparently I have a retroverted uterus. Which means it is tipped back towards the spine rather than towards the front so it will still be a while before I feel her move. In the doctors words - could be tomorrow could be weeks (nice). I said "that's ok, that just means she is deeper in there and a little more protected". Plus my belly fat is like a little down comforter to her. Rather than just a layer of skin. ;) So she is really snuggly. I am comforted by this, the doctor thinks I am crazy; Damon knows me and accepts my katieisms. Oh well.
I have lost another 3.5 pounds (total of around 8, not much), both the doctor and Damon are not happy about that. I don't really know what to say about that, of course I am kind of happy. I eat when I am hungry, it’s not like I am dieting. Not a lot of food sounds good to me. The doctor wants me to eat more carbs. Fun! My stomach is upset all the time so the doctor wants me to go on the Brat Diet. It seems to be helping some.
On a side note: my BP was 130/74! This has gone down ALOT since 8/9/10 (which was 154/91). I don’t put salt on anything anymore and I'm sure my weight lost has helped.
Until next time...
Love,
Katie

Ultrasound on 9/20 19.5 weeks pregnant
![]() |
You can see her nose and ear. Her little hand is up by her face, you can see a couple of fingers! |

Baby foot! |
It’s a girl!!! I think Damon and I are both in a state of shock. Of course we are happy but we really were expecting a boy. I just knew that inside was a boy, but nope it’s a little girl! I think it will be for the best, she is going to have Damon wrapped around her little finger and now all Damon has are girls (me, annie the cat, keiko and zoe) :o) So now we are on the task to start thinking of little girl names!
With the ultrasound machine they checked the baby's brain and heart. They measured the length of her bones, head and overall body. From the measurements she weighs 11 ounces! They identified both of her little ovaries so there is no mistake that it is a girl! :)

Damon The Baby Whisperer
Before:
Labor Day weekend Damon and I decided to go to Paris, TN to visit family. We got to meet our new little nephew Gavin. When we got there Saturday morning Gavin was not a happy boy and was crying. Damon held him and rubbed his little belly and soon the little guy was off to sleep. The pics are so cute that I had to post them :)

After:
Dr. Appt on 8/31/10
This appointment was very quick. Dr. Spetalnick checked the baby’s heart beat it was 140-150 beats a minutes and is about 7 3/4" long.
I have lost another 2-3 pounds. Dr. Spetalnick isn’t very happy about that and told me that I don’t need to lose any more weight. I said well I just bought a treadmill this past weekend (yard sale $20, I rule) and he said you can walk on it just don’t lose weight. I was like...uhh then why would I walk on it? I don’t really have a baby belly just looks like fat. It's hard to believe that there really is a baby in there. I can tell that all my organs are being pushed up in my chest because the top part of my stomach is hard. Apparently at this stage some woman can feel the baby hiccup and move - I unfortunately can’t feel a dang thing.
The best part of the appointment was he told me that I needed to schedule ANOTHER appointment for the ultrasound. I thought we were going to do it on 9/28 when we had to see him but NOPE! We have to schedule a separate appointment b/c it is in a different office. Totally pumped I made the appointment as soon as humanly possible but still close to the 20 week mark. We are going on 9/20 at 2pm to find out if its a boy or girl! I will be right at 19 weeks and 3 days! :)

Katie

A Gift from Grandama & Grandpa Nash
1st visit with the OBGYN 8/9/10
So yesterday Damon and I had our 1st visit with the OBGYN (Dr. Spetalnick) apparently he likes to have you meet with the nurses at first to make sure it is a viable pregnancy. He has been my doctor for MANY years now so I am used to his slight kookiness and vague answers. Example: I say "so, packaged meat...can I really not eat it?" and he say "well, what’s to say you can’t eat something...I mean you can get sick just as he can from eating deli meat." I looked at Damon (who I warned in advance) with a puzzled look on my face...So i guess that is a no??!! hehehe. Even with his vague answers Dr. Spetalnick is one of the best at Vanderbilt.
On an completely awesome note:
We got to hear the baby's heart beat! It was so fast and cute (can an audio clip be cute?) I asked if he could record it for me and he laughed...that’s a no. 150 beats a minutes!
We got to schedule the rest of our visits:
08/31/10
09/28/10 find out the sex!
10/26/10
11/23/10
12/21/10
01/04/11

3 Months Down 7/30/10
I am officially 12 weeks today! This means by nausea should start going away, my energy should increase and life will start going back to normal. Well as normal as can be with a little one inside me!
On the downside I have a crazy cold and it has hit me hard.
Here is a note from Parenting.com:
Dear Mom-To-Be,
Time may be moving in slow motion, but you're about to reach an important milestone--the end of the first trimester. Your baby now weighs about half an ounce and is about 2 1/2 inches long from top to bottom. From toothbuds to toenails, the fetus is now fully formed. He can even open his mouth and wiggle his fingers and toes, though you are still probably not feeling any movement. Development is in high gear, as fetal nerve cells multiply rapidly and synapses start firing.

Results of Genetic Testing
The nurse called me Friday, July 30th to let me know that all my tests came back in the normal range. The chances of me having a down syndrome baby is 1 in 10,000 and Trisomy baby is 1 in 9,530. I said well the odds on that don't seem as good as the first result and she said not to worry it is all in the normal range. :) They will test one more time in the second trimester just to be sure. YAY!

Genetic Testing 7/26/10

Morning all!
Today I went in for genetic testing on the baby. They did an Ultra Screen which tests for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 13 & 18 (if this comes back positive then I can carry the baby full term but it will die when it is born). I should have the results in 1 week. Part 1 of the test is an ultrasound that measures the fluid in the neck, the nurse said that was all ok! I have attached a couple pictures of the baby! It actually has a profile-nose & lips! It has fingers and toes! AND it was moving all around , flipping back and forth and wiggling its arms and legs!!! It was so cool!!! I didn’t hear the heartbeat but she measured it and it was 149 beats a minute! Which apparently is it the normal/good range! The first picture is a side profile with the face, neck and some belly. They second picture is a close up of the face with the little hand by the face!!! We see the OBGYN on August 9th!

Putting Together the Crib/Dresser/Changing Table 7/23/10
Mom came over and the 3 of us put together the crib, dresser, and changing table. It was definitely a pain in the butt. They was only a small amount of cursing. I just have 1 question: why in the hell is all of that so hard to put together? I am very skilled with tools and have put together more than my far share of furniture. Damn you instructions! We are missing 3 pieces of hardware (have been ordered online) - I guess that is what you get buying out of a storage unit. The furniture looks great though!

Only with Damon & Katie - A Crib Story
I love a deal. Seriously-I am a coupon cutter. Maybe even obsessed. If there is something nig that I want to purchase I know that if I go online I WILL be able to find some sort of coupon or a place that is having a deal. So, once I knew what kind of crib I was looking for I started my online search. I went to craigslist and *BAM* the first post was the exact crib that I wanted (brand new in the box) with the matching dresser (also, brand new in box)! Buy the crib get the dresser free. FREE! To make a long story short we decide to get it. Damon and I trek it down to Nashville/Antioch to a storage facility that is near the airport. Yeah, sketchy. The guy is super nice a little high energy and says "hey you know what, I will give you a free changing table too!" I was like "word." So he opens all these storage units that are stock FULL of baby stuff all new in the box and I felt like I died and went to heaven! I seriously wanted to buy 1 of everything! The guy says that he gets everything from stock overages and store closings but Damon is convinced that it is all "picked up" off the back of a UPS truck. Ahh the adventures of us. Classy.

Shopping with Mom
Mom & I went shopping at Target just to look around and have fun! I discovered that there really is not a lot of neutral gender stuff that is cute. Plus, if you know Damon you know that he HATES the color Green! We decided that we had to get something so mom got a complete matching outfit: hat, mittens, onesie (with footies), swaddling blankets. She also purchased a baby matress and we looked around at the furniture. Target online is much better! This is the set we are going to go with: DaVinci Kalani Collection in Espresso.

Everything went well at the doctors. The baby is alive and looking good so far. It measures an inch long and is 9 weeks 3 days old. I had a bunch of blood work done and lots of information to read up on. Damon and I are in the process of deciding if we want to go ahead with genetic testing, going to see what insurance covers first. We are also going to talk with a financial planner that will look at our insurance and tell us how much it will be and we can go ahead and start paying monthly now. I have attached the ultrasound! Its so cute!!!

(Technically) Damon's 1st Father's Day 6/20/10
Father's Day came very soon for Damon. I wanted to surprise him with something sweet and meaningful. This was very hard to do as I have really never done this before. I decided to get him a cute little onesie that could be used for both a boy or girl and some cookies. For added fun I threw in some Toy Story 3 mac & cheese. I think Damon was surprised that I did anything and all and was amazed at how little the onesie was!

Itty Bitty Newborn Diaper
So I had to purchase SOMETHING! When I first started looking I had no idea what to get to quench my urge to BUY BUY BUY! I decided to get a pack of diapers. Then I could resist - I had to open them! - They are the smallest little baby diapers ever! I am so excited to see its tiny little baby butt! There is even a little cut out at the top for the umbilical cord!

6/5/10
Not many people knew that Damon and I have been trying to have a baby since Thanksgiving of 2009. Every month I would get my hopes up and every month I would be disappointed. April was a really rough month on me emotionally as I was really expecting to be pregnant(details we don’t need to put on a blog). So in May I decided to forget about it for a while and start training for a half marathon and start going out more while I was still young. My monthly visitor was scheduled to visit me on June 3rd (I am positive of this as I have been tracking it for months), even though I decided to move on deep down I was nervous/excited/hopeful that I would not see my monthly visitor. Come Saturday (June 6th) I just couldn't wait anymore, I had to pee on a stick. I had hope but was skeptical since at this point I have spent a small fortune in pregnancy tests and have peed on a gazillion sticks (never believing just 1 stick). The line did not take long to appear. At first it was very faint. Damon was outside on the deck with the dogs and I ran out of the bathroom (at this point I was crying) instantly Damon was on alert "what's wrong?" "what is it? Katie!?" I hugged him and said "we are having a baby!!!" He said "What??!!" "really" then something along the lines of "oh god" "oh my god" I said "are you shocked?" he said "yes" I was like boo-we have been trying to months! He said "yea, but now its real." (teehhhee) I wanted to tell everyone and their mother but Damon said "wait, we have to find out if its real or not." I was like HELLLOOO-DO YOU SEE MY STICK??? He said well do it again in the morning...they say the morning is more accurate. So I did and again 2 lines!
Love,
Katie
